Linocut

A linocut is a type of relief print created by carving into a piece of linoleum using sharp tools like knives and gouges. The remaining areas are inked, a piece of paper is placed on top and pressure is applied to the paper. It is possible to handprint using a baren or spoon and some of my pieces are handprinted but most of them are printed using a press because of their large size.

Working in linocut has really honed my appreciation for line and texture. Scaling up to do the three feet tall abstract tree forms stretches my mind in new directions. The way the details that are so abstract and broken down into circles and lines up close reconfigure into complicated, layered compositions with movement and depth is fascinating to me. I print each of the resulting plates in a limited edition, but also use the plates to create books and other multi-media projects. The larger prints are harder to print, so the larger the print, the smaller the edition.
